The world is set to fail on 2030 food goal

Combating Global Hunger and Malnutrition: Urgent Action Required

The world is facing a concerning stagnation in progress towards addressing global food insecurity and malnutrition, according to a recent report by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Despite the United Nations' ambitious goal of achieving zero hunger by 2030, the report paints a grim picture, highlighting the adverse impacts of conflicts, climate change, and economic crises that have fueled poor nutrition worldwide.

Tackling the Dual Burden of Hunger and Obesity

The report reveals that in the three years since the COVID-19 pandemic, issues such as undernourishment, food insecurity, obesity, and malnutrition have either stalled or worsened globally. The prevalence of moderate or severe food insecurity has reached 28.9% of the global population, with an estimated 700 million people facing hunger in 2023.

Widening Disparities Across Regions

The report highlights stark regional disparities in the battle against food insecurity and malnutrition. While Latin America and the Caribbean have seen significant improvements, Africa continues to struggle, with one in five people facing hunger. In Asia, the situation has remained relatively unchanged for the past three years. Globally, the report estimates that 582 million people will be chronically undernourished by the end of the decade unless urgent action is taken.

Tackling the Dual Burden of Hunger and Obesity

The report also sheds light on the growing problem of the dual burden of hunger and obesity, particularly in higher-income countries. People in these countries may develop obesity due to sluggish metabolism, inflammation, or overconsumption of calories, while not receiving adequate essential nutrients. This has resulted in stagnant global rates of childhood overweight, with childhood obesity becoming more prevalent and laying the foundations for future health problems.

Uneven Economic Growth and Accessibility of Healthy Food

The report also highlights the impact of uneven economic growth on global food security. It estimates that one in three people globally cannot afford to eat healthily, a significant increase from 2017. This is due to the persistent challenge of healthy food being more expensive and less accessible than unhealthy options in many parts of the world.

Addressing the Financing Gap for Achieving Zero Hunger

The report also delves into the financing challenges associated with achieving the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal of zero hunger by 2030. It predicts a potential financing gap of up to several trillion U.S. dollars between what's needed and what's actually invested. However, the report suggests that the focus should not be solely on increasing funding, but rather on making food security and nutrition financing more efficient and effective.

Transforming Global Food Systems and Rethinking Financing

To address these pressing challenges, the report calls for an acceleration of efforts to transform global food systems and rethink the financing of work to end global hunger. This will require a concerted and collaborative approach, involving governments, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society. By tackling the root causes of food insecurity and malnutrition, and ensuring the equitable distribution of resources, the world can move closer to achieving the goal of a hunger-free world by 2030.
