Creative Nexus Calls for Diverse Artists for Art Justice Project
In an era where organizations and small businesses are gearing up for another round of equity and inclusion setbacks across various sectors, a remarkable new artist development series named Creative Nexus is coming to the forefront in Sarasota. This initiative aims to provide crucial support to marginalized artists, offering them a platform to showcase their talents and grow in their careers.

Empowering Marginalized Artists in Sarasota's Art Scene

Weathering Delays and Building Enthusiasm

Creative Nexus made its debut in October, having faced delays due to Hurricanes Debby, Helene, and Milton. These natural disasters had a significant impact on businesses and artistic opportunities across the region. However, despite the challenges, the kick-off event at Fogartville managed to attract more than two dozen attendees. This event served as a testament to the enthusiasm and determination of the event leaders, who believe in the power of collaboration and innovation.

Founded by Yoleidy Rosario-Hernandez, Mosaic Movements is at the heart of this artist development series. The organization aims to create transformative spaces for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ artists, providing them with the necessary resources and support to thrive. Hernandez, who previously served as New College of Florida's diversity dean, brings a wealth of experience and a passion for art to the project. After facing systemic barriers, Hernandez found herself starving for an artistic space and is now dedicated to positioning Mosaic Movements as a platform for nurturing creativity.

"Our goal is to empower artists of color to elevate their careers while fostering connections and collaboration," Hernandez said. "We believe that arts and culture are the foundation of Black and brown expression, and by providing a platform for these artists, we are helping them build a solid foundation for their artistic careers."

Supporting Marginalized Artists with Stipends and Workshops

Selected artists in the Creative Nexus series will receive a generous ,000 stipend, which will help them focus on their artistic pursuits and advance their careers. In addition to the stipend, the series offers a range of workshops and networking opportunities to help artists grow and connect with others in the industry.

Upcoming events include career planning and branding workshops, a youth artist meet-up, and a full-day artist summit in late May. These events are designed to provide artists with the tools and resources they need to succeed in their careers. The highlight of the initiative is a collaborative art installation that aims to engage the community in dialogue about how marginalized communities thrive amid systemic challenges.

"Arts and culture are the foundation of Black and brown expression," Hernandez said. "By creating a collaborative art installation, we are giving these artists a voice and a platform to share their stories with the community."

A Full Series of Events to Nurture Artistic Growth

The Creative Nexus event schedule kicks off in early spring and continues through May, offering a comprehensive range of activities for artists. From career planning workshops to full-day summits, there is something for every artist at every stage of their career.
