City of Orlando seeks artist for food-inspired public art project

Transforming Orlando's Landscape: Harnessing Art to Address Food Insecurity

The City of Orlando has embarked on a groundbreaking initiative to tackle the pressing issue of food insecurity through the power of public art. Awarded a million grant from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Public Art Challenge, the city is seeking an artist to collaborate on a transformative project that will raise awareness and inspire change.

Igniting Change, One Brushstroke at a Time

Empowering the Community Through Interactive Installations

The project, titled "Art Pollination: Building Food Justice through Creativity," is spearheaded by Juan William Chávez, who will work alongside a selected artist to create a series of interactive installations throughout the city. These installations will be strategically placed along the Orlando Urban Trail, at community centers, food event sites, urban billboards, and in two dedicated exhibitions – one at the Downtown Arts District and the other at the Terrace Gallery within Orlando City Hall. The goal of these installations is to shed light on the often-invisible challenge of food insecurity. By engaging the community through art, the project aims to spark conversations, collaborations, and innovative solutions to address this pressing issue. Mayor Buddy Dyer emphasizes the transformative power of public art, stating, "We don't always see or know about our friends, neighbors, coworkers and others who may be struggling. The goal of this effort is to use the transformative power of public art and community gathering to help shine a light on this important issue and spark conversations and collaborations that help create and inspire change and innovative solutions."

Fostering Collaboration and Community Engagement

In addition to the primary artist, up to 20 additional selected artists will work alongside Chávez and Central Florida partners to conduct workshops, public gatherings, and cultural events that directly engage the community. This collaborative approach ensures that the project resonates with the local population and addresses their unique needs and perspectives. The project has garnered the support of several local nonprofits, including Black Bee Honey, 4Roots, Hebni Nutrition Consultants, Ideas for Us-Fleet Farming, Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida, the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS), and Orange County. These organizations will play a crucial role in shaping the project and ensuring its long-term impact on the community.

A Nationwide Effort to Address Civic Challenges

The "Art Pollination" project is part of the third Public Art Challenge from Bloomberg Philanthropies, which has awarded grants to several other cities across the United States. These projects address a range of civic issues, including public health, equity, climate change, and more. The initiative has received over 150 project proposals from 40 U.S. states, demonstrating the growing recognition of the power of public art to drive positive change.

Calling All Artists: Opportunity to Make a Difference

The City of Orlando is now inviting artists to apply for the "Art Pollination" project. Interested individuals working in visual art, new media, socially engaged art, performance, installation art, film and video, experimental art, conceptual art, and architecture can submit their applications through the CaFÉ portal by August 16th.The selected artists will have the opportunity to create impactful installations that will be developed and executed over the next 18 months, with an anticipated public launch beginning at the start of 2025. This collaborative effort promises to transform the landscape of Orlando, using the power of art to address the critical issue of food insecurity and inspire lasting change.
