The Impactful Great Idaho Food Drive
The Great Idaho Food Drive has emerged as a significant force in combating food insecurity across the state. This annual event has consistently shown its ability to gather a substantial amount of food and make a real difference in the lives of Idahoans.

Empowering Idaho with Food Donations

Partnerships and Collection Efforts

For the past five years, CBS2 has been actively involved in partnering with Les Schwab locations across the Treasure Valley and Eastern Oregon. Alongside TDS Fiber and Two Men and a Truck, these collaborations have created a powerful network for collecting food. As Les Schwab Tire Center Manager Chris Baker mentioned, "Our stores have collected so much food this year. It's heartwarming to see people come by with various amounts of food, showing their willingness to help." These partnerships have not only increased the quantity of food collected but have also raised awareness about the issue of food insecurity.

The Idaho Food Bank plays a crucial role in distributing the collected food to those in need. President Randy Ford emphasized, "We can't end hunger alone and this is fantastic to see everyone showing up. The Great Idaho Food Drive means so much to us as 85% of the food we get throughout the year is donated and reaches across the state."

The Rising Problem of Food Insecurity

The Idaho Food Bank has been observing a slow but steady increase in food insecurity across the state. As Ford stated, "Across the state, there's been a slow but steady incline. We're hearing from our partners that families are visiting for the first time or more frequently. 14.5% of children across the state are experiencing food insecurity." This statistic highlights the urgent need for continued efforts like the Great Idaho Food Drive.

One in seven Idaho children are directly impacted by food insecurity, a fact that Two Men and a Truck owner Terry Bruns is determined to address. He said, "You can be out there, living your life, and not realize the struggle some people are having. Thankfully, we have organizations like the Idaho Food Bank."

The Importance of Donations

While food donations are crucial, monetary donations also play a significant role. Ford explained, "Five dollars can provide food for up to 15 meals. These donations allow us to stretch our dollars and make an even greater impact across the state." Just because the Great Idaho Food Drive is over doesn't mean the need for food ends. Food insecurity knows no season or zip code.

As Baker emphasized, "Going into the holidays, it's really important that people have warm meals and something to celebrate with their families. A good warm meal for Thanksgiving and Christmas helps bring the family together."
