Unlocking the Creative Potential at Yale: Design at Yale Showcases Student Artistry

Design at Yale (DAY), a student-led organization dedicated to fostering a vibrant design community on campus, recently hosted a captivating event on Cross Campus. The "DAY Store" allowed students to showcase and sell their unique, self-made art, providing a platform for artistic expression and fostering a sense of community among the visually inclined at Yale.

Unleashing Creativity and Connecting the Yale Community

Cultivating a Design-Driven Community

Design at Yale, a diverse collective of undergraduates from various disciplines, skill levels, and backgrounds, has made it its mission to make design more accessible and joyful for the entire Yale community. By organizing events like the DAY Store, the organization aims to create a space where students can connect, share their artistic passions, and learn from one another.Gabby Uy '25, one of the co-presidents of DAY, emphasized the group's commitment to inclusivity, stating, "Our mission has always been to make design more joyful and accessible no matter what your familiarity level is with design." This inclusive approach has fostered a tight-knit community where students can explore their creative interests, regardless of their prior experience or artistic background.

Empowering Student Artists and Designers

The DAY Store event provided a unique platform for student artists and designers to showcase their work and connect with their peers. Johan Zongo '27, a student selling prints during the afternoon, expressed the goal of DAY to "create a space at Yale where artists can come and get to know each other."This opportunity allowed students to not only display their creations but also engage in meaningful conversations with interested buyers and fellow artists. The event served as a catalyst for artistic collaboration and the exchange of ideas, further strengthening the design community at Yale.

Defining the Essence of Design

Design, as a discipline, encompasses a multifaceted approach that goes beyond mere artistic expression. Student artist Lily Lin '27 provided a nuanced perspective, explaining, "For art, it's mostly expression, but this is designing for someone else's eyes." This distinction highlights the unique nature of design, where aesthetics and functionality are carefully balanced to create visually appealing and purposeful works. The DAY Store event allowed visitors to immerse themselves in this design-centric mindset, exploring the diverse range of student-created pieces that combined technical skill, creative vision, and a keen understanding of the target audience.

Fostering Artistic Exploration and Growth

The DAY Store event was not just a platform for showcasing student art; it also served as a gateway for prospective designers and artists to connect with the vibrant design community at Yale. Elias Shaw-Rothberg '28, who attended the event, expressed the palpable "creative energy" that permeated the atmosphere, captivating students and sparking their interest in the visual arts.Beyond the event, Design at Yale offers a range of opportunities for students to deepen their engagement with design. From beginner-friendly workshops to collaborative projects through the DAY Studio, the organization provides a supportive environment for individuals to hone their skills, build their portfolios, and explore the professional aspects of design. As Gabby Uy '25 eloquently stated, "If you're looking for something a little higher-commitment, DAY Studio collaborates on self-initiated projects in addition to client work — Studio is a great way to build your design portfolio, get a taste of what it's like to work as a professional designer, and mostly just have fun making things together."The Design at Yale community extends its reach beyond the event, inviting students to immerse themselves in the organization's vibrant ecosystem and unlock their creative potential.
